This past summer I was given the opportunity to spend the month of June volunteering at a YoungLife camp as a part of work crew. As a member of work crew I would be assigned a job of dishwashing, serving, landscaping, or housekeeping. Glamorous right? However, before knowing I would be accepted, my family planned a ten-day vacation to explore Italy, a place I had always dreamed of going someday. So that left me with a decision. Did I want to spend ten days immersed in Italian culture and cuisine? Or did I want to spend a month cleaning toilets and making the beds of middle schoolers? I made the obvious decision that I feel any other high school girl in my predicament would have made, and that was to clean toilets for a month.
Looking back on my choice, I don’t regret it even in the slightest. My month in Oregon at Washington Family Ranch Creekside was the best and hardest month of my entire life. Sharing a single room and bathroom (which me & my fellow HK ladies at least attempted to clean) with 28 other girls from all over the country created this amazing community with people I know consider a second family. While the long days of cleaning toilets and folding sheets until we cry were seemingly endless, the relationships I built during my time in Oregon made the whole experience more than worth it. Through the daily challenges, nightly luaus, and weekly worship I grew immensely as an individual as well as in my relationship with Christ. Not only did I see my life change during my month of serving, but I got the chance to witness the lives of my fellow work crew members and hundreds of campers become transformed through God’s grace.
Without YoungLife none of this would have been possible. I can truly say my life has changed for the better because of this experience and I want nothing more than for others to get this opportunity as well. So for anyone who is skeptical of YoungLife, I encourage you to at least give it a chance and reach out to a leader for your school! If you do not know who your leader is or have any other questions about YoungLife or my experience, please don’t be afraid to ask!!!
