Beauty is an idea that everyone strives for. Magazines try to create a perfect image of beauty, cosmetic companies promise women products that will make them beautiful, women put each other down to make themselves feel more beautiful. Even after all the spending, gossip, and countless hours in front of the mirror, we feel worse about ourselves than when we started! This destructive cycle continues until our wallets are empty, our hearts are hollow, and our confidence is rock bottom. This shallow perspective of beauty obviously isn’t working, so what does? If you want to be beautiful, then follow these simple steps:
- For beautiful eyes: Try to see the good in people
We are told at a young age not to judge a book by its cover, yet we constantly judge others by their appearance. Within the first 5 seconds of meeting someone, we’ve already formed an opinion about them, without even breaking the surface of who they really are. Instead of jumping to conclusions, take some time to get to know others, you may find that you have more in common than you think. But even if you don’t come to that conclusion, focus on the good in them rather than the bad. Even good people make mistakes sometimes, but that doesn’t mean they’re bad people. Try not to base your opinion of someone on that one mistake. Instead, love them for all their positive attributes. Trust me, you will start seeing people, and life, in a better way.
- For beautiful ears: Listen to others
Ignorance is not bliss. In fact, many argue that ignorance is what causes many of the problems we see today. So get outside! Learn something new! Explore different cultures! Listen with an open heart when people speak! Don’t close yourself off to the many wonders of the world. There are so many interesting people that have stories to tell that may impact your life for the better!
- For a beautiful smile: Laugh uncontrollably
Laughter is truly the best medicine! Find people that make you laugh uncontrollably, the kind of laughter that makes your stomach hurt and your eyes tear up, and never let them go. These are the people that will change a bad day to a good day in a heartbeat. Tell a funny joke, make a funny face, and forget about life for a while! Too many times we focus on the stress in our lives and the growing to-do list, so take some time to sit back, and just laugh!
- For beautiful legs: Dance your heart out
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve shut my door, blasted my music, and danced around my room. It is the Best. Feeling. EVER. Make this a regular part of your routine! Feel the stress of life melt off your body as you shake your hips, pump your arms, and move your feet. Release tension and clear your head with just three minutes of careless movement. Your life will be lighter and brighter in no time!
- For beautiful arms: Reach for your dreams
Everyone has a dream when they are young, and most everyone has been told “no” to that dream at some point in their life. When I was young, I was obsessed with becoming a model when I grew up. The boys at school laughed in my face, told me I was “too short”, “not pretty enough”. I told them I wanted to make a difference in the world, and they told me I wasn’t “special enough”. But guess what? I modeled for my senior photo shoot, modeled in promotional photos for a photographer, and I’m currently pursuing Biomedical Engineering at Virginia Tech so that I can invent the future of the world. The point I’m trying to make is: forget what the haters say! If you want to do something, DO IT. Don’t wait for someone else’s approval. Reach for the stars and FIGHT for your dreams! Your life will be so much more fulfilled if you do.
- For beautiful hands: Serve others
Making a difference in someone else’s life is a feeling that everyone should experience at least once. One of the best experiences I’ve had in my short seventeen years was going on a mission trip with my church to the Dominican Republic. For a week we went to impoverished villages to deliver food and play games with the children. It was incredible how just a week of service transformed not only the Dominican kid’s lives, but our lives as well. It’s hard not to come back home with a heart full of love and grace after an experience like that. But you don’t have to go halfway across the world to serve others, you can perform small acts of kindness in your community! Help carry groceries, compliment someone, pay for someone’s meal, hold the door for someone- whatever you do, do it with a happy heart and without seeking recognition! Your life will be blessed because of it!
- For a beautiful heart: Love unconditionally
Heart is the most important thing when it comes to beauty. If your heart is full of love and joy and compassion and kindness, your beauty will radiate from the inside-out! People will take notice when you walk down the street! They will all be wondering “what makes that girl so different”, “how can I be more like her?” That is my hope for everyone who reads this. I hope that you will become a light in a world of darkness. So for my final piece of advice on how to become beautiful: love unconditionally. Not only love those who love you, but love those who are mean to you, and those who doubt you. Now, I know that is much easier said than done, but the verse that I am going to leave you with has tremendously helped me with this concept:
Luke 6:27-36: “But I say to you who are listening, love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who are cruel to you. If anyone slaps you on one cheek, offer him the other cheek, too. If someone takes your coat, do not stop him from taking your shirt. Give to everyone who asks you, and when someone takes something that is yours, don’t ask for it back. Do to others what you would want them to do to you. If you love only the people who love you, what praise should you get? Even sinners love the people who love them…. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.”
Live a beautiful life!
