My name is Abigail Yewdall and I'm 16 years old. About 3 years ago I moved from Phoenix, Arizona to Cary, North Carolina which was the biggest change I've ever experienced in my life.
I was 13 years old when my family sold our house in Arizona. My whole life I had grown up in Phoenix; I knew no differently than living in the desert surrounded by enormous, brown mountains and cacti growing everywhere. I grew up knowing to be careful while hiking the mountain next to my house in case there was a rattlesnake nearby, knowing to turn on the light in a room before I walked into it to make sure I didn't step on a scorpion, and learning to sleep through the coyotes howling during the night. All these things were normal to me, Arizona was my only home.
After packing away everything I owned into boxes and seeing my empty house waiting for a new family to move into it, I really started to think about how much my life was going to change and realized that I had the ability to change who I was too. The drive from Phoenix to Cary was three days long which gave me a considerable amount of time to think about everything. I felt very unsure about what to expect and nervous about all the inevitable changes that were coming my way: different city, house, school, people, and way of life.
I moved into my house three days before school started which made unpacking stressful but prevented me from overthinking the start of 8th grade at a new school. I had a difficult time adjusting at first; people were very different than how they had been in Arizona. I was starting from scratch with making friends, meeting people, and figuring out who everyone was and I definitely struggled at first. I slowly got the hang of how life was in Cary and adapted more and more. Eventually, I felt like I belonged in the place I moved to and I couldn't have been happier.
After a few years of living in Cary, numerous things have changed, myself included. Life has been full of surprises and ups and downs, but ultimately life has been incredible. Out of all the things I learned from moving and adapting to a new place, this is the most important: embrace change, and love life!
